High Energy Blue Light

You encounter blue light in everyday activities. Fluorescent lighting, electronic screens (phones, tablets, computers, TVs, etc.), and the sun emit damaging high energy blue light. Blue light causes gradual oxidative damage to the macula over your lifetime, eroding cellular functions needed to keep this delicate tissue healthy, leaving your eyes susceptible to developing Macular Degeneration. Additionally, blue light impacts your daily vision at any age causing blinding glare discomfort and poor visual contrast.

Blue light contributes to the oxidative retinal damage that leads to AMD. While UV light is damaging to our skin, and eye surface, it does not reach the retina as it is blocked by the cornea and lens. Only visible light reaches the retina and it is blue light that causes damage. So all of this blue light enters the eye and has the potential to cause oxidation in the macula.

Blue light penetrates through the inner retinal layers, through the photoreceptors and to the outer retinal layers known as the Retinal Pigment Epithelium, or RPE.

The damage from AMD begins in the space between the RPE and Bruch’s membrane. This damage starts in the form of drusen, but what is happening is an oxidative processes causing damage. Another oxidative process is rust, so you can think of AMD as if the back of our eye were rusting.

As blue light comes in and hits the macula, and over time as we age the oxidation begins. So at first we might see a few drusen which are these small yellow spots.

Over time, this progresses as more and more of the oxidative damage occurs.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is the progressive deterioration of the macula and is the leading cause of visual impairment. Hastened by blue light exposure, macular degeneration deteriorates healthy cells within the macula, affecting your central frame of vision. This loss of vision affects reading, writing, driving, color perception, and other cognitive functions. Serious complications can lead to blindness.

BluTech

BluTech lenses provide blue light protection, while enhancing vision and increasing contrast, allowing for the safest most comfortable vision possible. BluTech Lenses provide protection the way nature intended, by enhancing the eyes natural protection mechanisms of ocular lens pigment and melanin; a revolutionary solution for the lifelong preservation of eye health that can help in the prevention of macular degeneration.

MacuHealth

Looking at the back of the eye, we have what can be thought of as our internal protection in the form of macular pigment.

It is located right below the retinal surface in the inner retinal layer and is made of three components, Meso-zeaxanthin, Zeaxanthin, and Lutein. And although you can find all three components throughout the macula, the majority of it is arranged in somewhat of a bull-eye pattern. Together, these carotenoid pigments combine to protect the macula from the oxidizing damage of blue light, acting as a shield. Also as the pigments extend into the bodies of the photoreceptors they act as an antioxidant.

MacuHealth is available at our store at a lower price than you will find online. However, to make it more convenient for our patients, you can now order your MacuHealth online. Follow the link below!
